Congressman Scott Perry took to the House floor to condemn the practice and introduced a resolution calling for international efforts to end FGM worldwide. FGM is a deeply rooted cultural practice, impacting more than 200 million women worldwide. It’s routinely performed on girls from infancy to age 15 in more than 25 countries, most recently finding its way to the US. FGM comprises partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It’s an unconscionable, systematic form of abuse and subjugation perpetuated against the youngest and most vulnerable among us. Now’s the time to stand up for the voiceless and criminalize the horror that is FGM.
