A Michigan doctor facing trial for FGM may have mutilated the genitals of up to 100 girls, federal prosecutors say.
The mutilations allegedly occurred “during a 12-year conspiracy,” according to prosecutors seeking to keep the doctor and two assistants behind bars until their October trial, the Detroit News reports.
“Due to the secretive nature of this procedure, we are unlikely to ever know how many children were cut by Dr. [Jumana] Nagarwala,” Assistant US Attorney Sara Woodward told the court. One hundred girls “is a conservative figure,” she said.
The three are on trial for mutilating two small girls from Minnesota. “The Minnesota victims were not the first victims,” Woodward said.
Federal district judge Bernard Freedman allowed two of the defendants, Fakhruddin Attar and Farida Attar, to stay at home on bond, but Nagarwala will remain in jail until trial.
