New York State’s Challenge To Criminalize FGM ‘Vacation Cutting’

Religious and secular groups in the United States facilitate female genital mutilation in America. Here is a partial list:

American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU is opposing legislation in Maine that would criminalize FGM.

Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America. This religious legal group issued a ruling or fatwa declaring that FGM “is an honorable thing for females,” and, while not obligatory, “it is good if you do it.”

Dar al-Hijra Islamic Center. Based in Falls Church, Virginia, this influential mosque is run by Imam Shaker Elsayed. The imam views FGM as necessary to discourage promiscuity. Elsayed delivered the message in a May 19, 2017, talk on the “Foundation of a Happy Family.”
