Do you know that Female Genital Mutilation is the partial or total removal of the external female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This act has done terrible damage to girls’ organs as it causes severe pain and may result in prolonged bleeding, infection, infertility and even death. This is violation against the right of a girl-child which you must be aware of. Many of you whose parents are aware of the campaign against this are lucky to have escaped the terrible act but what about other girls in the villages? What about your friends whose parents, those educated, still believe in the tradition of female genital mutilation?
Do you know that despite the campaign against this act, we could have had a case last week but for the intervention of the mother who ran away with her twins girls in Imo State.
It was reported in the Vanguard Newspapers, last week, that one Mrs. Vivian Ogechi Nwanebu, from Umuoku, Umuazalaukwu in Imo State, prevented some traditionalists from carrying out female genital mutilation on her twin ten-year old daughters. This is uncalled for as these traditionalists didn’t even bother subjecting these children to the pains of this mutilation.
As a child, you should know that it is your right to reject it as it is tagged harmful practices against children and it is one of the target goals of United Nations to be totally eliminated by 2030.
Every girl-child must be aware that it is violation of her rights and has the right to refuse.
